Signs Your Fluoride Intake is Too Low

Posted on 1/20/2019 by Freeman Dental Associates - Cohasset
Signs Your Fluoride Intake is Too LowYou probably already know that the whole point of putting fluoride in drinking water was to ensure that everyone had access to trace amounts of that necessary mineral.

Horror stories have been written about the bad condition of people's teeth in the past, but in case you haven't read them, here are a few signs to look out for if your fluoride intake is too low.

Brittle Bones and Bad Teeth

One of the foremost warning signs of low fluoride is an excess of cavities. Normally, with the proper amounts of the mineral, teeth will naturally form barriers that help protect against them. If you develop cavities despite meticulous care, it may be time to use a fortified toothpaste to help.

Another warning sign that frequently doesn't get detected until advanced age is brittleness and weakness of bones, including the bones that form our teeth. If you experience inexplicable chipping or breaking, whether limited to just your teeth or spread throughout your body (especially the hips), a lack of fluoride may be to blame.

If you didn't get enough fluoride as a child, you may be able to tell by whether or not your teeth are misshapen or poorly formed, or uniform and crisp in presentation. Teeth need fluoride to grow properly, and in the absence of fluoride, they may become bucked, lopsided, gapped, or tilted.

Don't Overdo It

On the opposite end of the spectrum, it is important to avoid overcompensating by intaking too much (over 1-2mg a day for children, or more than 2-4mg a day for adults), as this can lead to soapy aftertastes, rashes, drooling, diarrhea, or even seizures at moderate overdoses, and can cause cancer, bone deformities, and death at extreme dosages (<20mg a day.)

If you are unsure if you are getting the right amount of fluoride, or any other necessary nutrients and vitamins, feel free to contact us with any questions and observations you may have, and we will work with you to make sure you don't have to suffer a pre-modern disfigured and browned grin.
