Social media and other accessible means of communications are continually pushing the next great thing that will whiten your teeth, but you should be wary of these trends without speaking to us first. In most cases, these are just misconceptions that do more harm than good.

Detox Cleanses

Acidic foods can damage your enamel when they come into contact with your teeth. While eating citrus is healthy because things like oranges and lemons contain significant amounts of vitamin C, they can also harm your teeth. One of the most popular trends is to detox your stomach with drinks that use lemon juice and other ingredients. These drinks could also hurt your gums.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This is another common trend for people concerned with their health. Apple cider vinegar has many wonderful properties, but it can be extremely harmful to your oral health. Those who believe in the powers of this vinegar are firm believers that it will cure anything from digestive issues to yellow teeth. Apple cider vinegar is very acidic, and it can damage the enamel when ingested regularly.

Mouth Piercings

Body piercings have been very popular with youngsters for many years, but piercing things such as your lips or tongue could create serious issues with your oral health. Having a piece of metal rubbing against the soft tissue of your mouth or your teeth is very problematic.

The metal can wear out the enamel and can also create lesions in the soft tissue of your lips and gums. It could also become infected and if the tongue swells, it could prevent you from breathing.

The bottom line is that many of these trends can and do affect your oral health. If you have any questions about something that sounds cool and you want to try it, give us a call to be on the safe side.
